Portrait of Speaker Andew Scheer

At age 32, Andew Scheer was the youngest Speaker in the history of Parliament. He was 25 when elected as an MP in Regina-Qu’Appelle in 2004. He emphasized fiscal restraint and transparency for the House. After four years as Speaker he resigned the role in 2015, and was leader of the Conservative party from 2017 to 2020. He remains a member of Parliament. Juan Carlos Martinez painted his portrait in 2018, the first of a Speaker not painted on canvas but on a gessoed panel. It was also the first to so unmistakably feature the Gothic architecture of Parliament.

Juan Carlos Martinez

Regina-based artist Juan Carlos Martinez followed an unusual path to art through law school, including a law degree and a Masters in intellectual property law. He practised law and then studied art in Toronto and Florence, Italy, and for more than 20 years has been creating portraits, figurative art, landscapes and still lifes in the realist tradition. He was an art instructor during his years working in Toronto, and continues to conduct workshops across North America and, online, to student artists around the world.
