I want to make sure I address you correctly.
I'm not going to go on about the annual reports too much, but right in the mandate it says that you shall make an annual report to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Science every year. Has anybody ever asked you where the reports were for the last three years or two years? Has anybody contacted your office and asked you about those?

One other question I want to ask you is on independence.
As the chief science advisor, do you get to pick what you want to investigate, or are you nudged and told you might want to consider a certain topic? I noticed you did an interview and the Minister of Health had asked you to conduct the long COVID study.
It's not criticizing you at all. I'm just asking this: Do you feel you have the independence to study what you want, or are you advised by a cabinet minister on what you should study?

Can I interrupt you for one second?
When you're asked by the health department to do a study on long COVID, are you provided an additional budget, or is the expectation that you'll do it out of your own internal budget?

Can I ask you one other question?
When you're putting together your plan to study long COVID on the recommendation of the health minister—and I know you are a well-respected molecular cardiovascular researcher—does the idea ever come up that if you're going to look at long COVID, you should also look at whether there are any potential harms the vaccine did to people? We see that in the news all the time.
Do you have the independence to say that you will study this, but if you're going to look at everything to do with COVID, you should look at all of it?

Thanks, Mr. Chair.
I want to thank all our witnesses for being here today.
Ms. Littlechild, I did some reading on your work. The one topic I'd like you to expand on for the benefit of the committee and for the report is your writing on ethical space. Could you elaborate a bit on that for the committee?

In my remaining time, I'll ask a question of Ms. Sayine-Crawford.
I can go back to years ago when I was first elected. Different things in government policy were burdensome, and there was red tape that just didn't make a lot of sense. Is there an approach in some of the indigenous practices and knowledge that we can relay back to government to say to them, “Okay, you have good intentions here, but actually, you're completely wasting your time, and this is a better approach to take for the natural environment and for society as a whole?”

Thanks very much, Mr. Chair.
I'd like to thank everybody for their presentations today.
My first question is for Ms. Tshernish.
A lot of the discussion in the last number of meetings has been specifically on integrating into the environment. I think there's been a lot discussion about the natural environment. I was wondering, though, if there are other areas where government should look at integrating or weaving in different departments where there might be some benefit, maybe in housing or in health care. Just looking around some of our main streets in the downtown core, there are a lot of issues right now. I'm wondering if maybe some of the solutions could be in some of the traditional knowledge.
Do you have any thoughts on that?

Sure. I can try that again.
It wouldn't be the first time I've been accused of saying a whole bunch of things that didn't come through clearly, I guess.
What I would ask plainly is, are there teachings other than in the natural environment? There's been a lot of discussion about the natural environment. Are there other teachings and cultural practices that we should look at weaving into government policy, such as on housing, the shortage of housing or some of the other societal ills, where we can maybe learn from our first peoples about what would make a lot of sense in our government policies?

Ms. Czuy, you mentioned, at the end your presentation, free, prior and informed consent. As you are so proficient in mathematics and have worked extensively within many communities, I'm curious if there is a finite period of time, or a calculation and solution, when a business wants to, let's say, build a mine—or whatever it might be—in a community or communities that might be impacted by that mine, which may or may not be for the good.... Is there a way for the community to say that they can check all the boxes and have been consulted and informed? Is there a calculation for that? Is there a way, or is it still a process that every community is working through?

No, I wasn't looking for any particular answer—just your answer.
If you turn on the news every night and look at the strife among what are called the western democracies, you could say, or just the issues in Canada in our cities and in our small communities, there are a lot of issues. What are some takeaways from indigenous communities that might provide some benefit to community or benefit to society? Do you have any comments or thoughts on that?
