MINUTES OF PROCEEDING
(Meeting No. 2)

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1997

The Standing Committee on Industry met at 9:08 o’clock a.m., this day, in room 371, West Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Chris Axworthy, Eugène Bellemare, Bonnie Brown, Antoine Dubé, Tony Ianno, Marlene Jennings, Francine Lalonde, Walt Lastewka, Eric Lowther, Ian Murray, Jim Pankiw, Janko Peric, Alex Shepherd and Susan Whelan.

Acting Members present: Rahim Jaffer for Werner Schmidt; and Elsie Wayne for Charlie Power.

Associate Members present: Philip Mayfield and Hélène Alarie.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament
: Antony Jackson, Daniel Brassard and Nathalie Pothier, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Office of the Auditor General: L. Denis Desautels, Auditor General of Canada; Douglas Timmins, Assistant Auditor General; and Nancy Cheng, Principal, Audit Operations.

The Chair presented the First Report of the Sub-Committee on Agenda and Procedure, which reads as follows:

"Your Sub-Committee met on Tuesday, October 7, 1997, and agreed to make the following recommendations:

That forty-eight (48) hours notice be given to the members of the Committee before any substantive motion is considered by the Committee unless the Committee gives consent otherwise.

That, pursuant to Standing Order 118(2), the Chair be authorized to hold meetings in order to receive and authorize the publishing of evidence when a quorum is not present provided that one member from the Government party and one member of an Opposition party, as well as the Chair, are present.

That the Committee meet with the Auditor General on Thursday, October 9, 1997 concerning the Report entitled: "Information Technology: Preparedness for Year 2000"."

On motion of Walt Lastewka, - That the First Report of the Sub-Committee on Agenda and Procedure be concurred in, it was agreed to.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to study the Report of the Auditor General, Chapter 12 "Information Technology: Preparedness for Year 2000".

L. Denis Desautels made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 10:47 o’clock a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
