MEETING No. 56

Monday, APRIL 27, 1998

The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 3:36 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Shaughnessy Cohen, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Michel Bellehumeur, Garry Breitkreuz, Shaughnessy Cohen, Paul DeVillers, Sheila Finestone, Derek Lee, Peter G. MacKay, John Maloney and Jack Ramsay.

Acting Member present: Chuck Cadman for Paul E. Forseth.

Other Member present: Guy Saint-Julien.

In attendance: : From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Senior Analyst, Marilyn Pilon, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Canada: Philip J. R. Murray, Commissioner; D.G. Cleveland, Assistant Commissioner, Human Resources Directorate; G. Zaccardelli, Deputy Commissioner, Director General; R. Charbonneau, Assistant Commissioner, Federal Services Directorate; C.G. Allen, Deputy Commissioner, Central Central Region; F.A. Richter, Assistant Commissioner, Corporate Management.

The Committee resumed consideration of its Order of Reference of Thursday, February 26, 1998, relating to the Main Estimates for 1998-99 (See Minutes of Proceedings, Monday, April 20, 1998, Meeting No.50).

By unanimous consent, the Chair called Votes 35 and 40, under SOLICITOR GENERAL.

Philip J. R. Murray made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:48 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
