MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS
Tuesday, March 17, 1998.
The Standing Committee on Transport met at 3:32 o’clock p.m., this day, in 269 West Block, the Chair, Raymond Bonin, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Murray Calder, Roy Cullen, Bev Desjarlais, Joe Fontana, Michel Guimond, Stan Keyes, Inky Mark, Lee Morrison and .
Acting Members present: Bob Nault for Ivan Grose; Rick Borotsick for Bill Casey.
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: John Christopher and Dan Shaw, Research Officers.
Witnesses: From Canadian Pacific Railway: Hugh MacDiarmid, Executive Vice-President, Commercial; Sandy McFadzean, Manager, Commuter Services.
In accordance with Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of a review of passenger rail services offered by Via Rail and the means to revitalize this important mode of transportation within the context of the fiscal and environmental concerns facing the Government (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Tuesday, February 17, 1998, Meeting No. 10.)
Hugh MacDiarmid made an opening statement and, with Sandy McFadzean, answered questions.
At 5:14 o’clock p.m., the Committee began to sit in camera to discuss its future business.
It was agreed,--That the Committee approves the proposed travel budget of $80,000 and that the Chair seek authorization from the House for the Committee to travel to Europe between April 20 to 27, 1998 in relation to its study on the National Passenger rail system.
At 5:20 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
