Thursday, March 18, 1999

The Sub-Committee on Corrections and Conditional Release Act of the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 9:30 a.m. this day, in Halifax in the World Trade and Conference Centre, the Chair, Paul DeVillers, presiding.

Members of the Sub-Committee present: Paul DeVillers, Jim Gouk, Ivan Grose, Peter MacKay and Richard Marceau.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Lynn Casavant, Researcher; Philip Rosen, Senior Analyst.

Witnesses: From the Department of Community Affairs and Attorney General for Prince Edward Island: Verna Ryan, Manager; From the Community Legal Information Association of Prince Edward Island: Ann Sherman, Executive Director; From the John Howard Society of New Brunswick: Brian Saunders, Executive Director; From the Mi'Kmaq Justice Institute: Heidi Marshall; From the Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland, Nova Scotia: Rhonda Crawford; From the Nova Scotia Legal Aid: Philip C MacNeil; From the John Howard Society (NF & Lab.): Terry Carlson; From the Cons for Christ: Mike Newman; From the Miramichi Community Corrections Council Inc.: Tim Hoban, President; From the St. Thomas University: Dr. Susan Reid-MacNevin, Associate Professor & Director of Criminology.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), a statutory review of the Corrections and Conditional Release Act.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

It was agreed, - That the Sub-Committee assume the cost of a working lunch in Truro, Nova Scotia.

At 1:45 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
