Meeting No. 4

Wednesday, May 22, 2002

The Sub-Committee on the Study of Sport in Canada of the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Dennis Mills, presiding.

Members of the Sub-Committee present: Rodger Cuzner, John Harvard, Robert Lanctôt, Dennis Mills, Dick Proctor, Hélène Scherrer.

Acting Member present: Chuck Strahl for Cheryl Gallant.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Antony Jackson, Research Officer.

Appearing: From the Department of Canadian Heritage: The Hon. Paul DeVillers, Secretary of State (Amateur Sport).

Witnesses: From the Department of Canadian Heritage: Roger Farley, Director, Legislation and Interdepartmental Coordination; Roger Charland, Counsel.

The Order of Reference dated Wednesday, April 17, 2002, being now read as follows:

ORDERED, -- That Bill C-54, An Act to promote physical activity and sport, referred to the Standing Committee on Monday, April 15, 2002, be further referred to the Sub-Committee on Sport, for consideration, and that the Sub-Committee report the Bill to the Standing Committee.

Pursuant to Standing Order 75(1), Clause 1 was stood.

The Chair called Clause 2.

Paul De Villers made a presentation and answered questions.

At 4:53 p.m., the Sub-Committee met in camera.

It was agreed, - That the Sub-Committee hear witnesses before proceeding further to consider the Bill clause-by-clause.

At 5:07 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
