The Honourable Francis Scarpaleggia

Speaker of the House of Commons

Elected to Parliament in 2004 and re-elected in 2006, 2008, 2011, 2015, 2019, 2021 and 2025, the Honourable Francis Scarpaleggia has been a dedicated and passionate advocate for his constituents in Lac-Saint-Louis. Known for his commitment to environmental sustainability and public service, he has long been a respected voice on key national issues.

Before being elected Speaker of the House of Commons, Mr. Scarpaleggia served as Chair of the Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development and as a member of several other important parliamentary committees, including the Special Committee on Electoral Reform.

Throughout his parliamentary career, Mr. Scarpaleggia has been an advocate for fresh water security. From 2011 to 2021, he also served as Chair of the National Liberal Caucus, a pivotal period in Canadian politics that saw the Liberal Party of Canada move from third-party status (the second opposition party) to forming government in a single election cycle. He has earned respect for his fair and thoughtful approach to leadership, particularly in helping guide the party through such a transformative era.

Mr. Scarpaleggia earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from McGill University and a master’s degree in economics from Columbia University, in New York. He later obtained a Master of Business Administration degree from Concordia University.

He resides in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec, with his wife, Jan, and their two children.
