WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25, 1998

The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 3:30 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Stan Dromisky, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jean Augustine, Stan Dromisky, Raymonde Folco, Jocelyne Girard-Bujold, Louise Hardy, Steve Mahoney, Maria Minna, and Jacques Saada.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Margaret Young, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From B'nai Brith Canada: Rubin Friedman, Director of Government Relations; David Matas, Senior Honorary Counsel. As an individual: David Matas, Refugee lawyer. From The Shipping Federation of Canada: David Garon, Manager, Marine Administration. From the Canada Employment and Immigration Union: Janina Lebon, National Vice-President; Alan Lennon, Senior Union Representative; Jeannette Meunier-McKay, National Executive Vice-President.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of Recommendation 155 of the Report of the Legislative Review Advisory Group entitled "Not just Numbers: A Canadian Framework for Future Immigration", particularly issues relating to removal and detention. (See Minutes of Proceedings of Wednesday, February 18, 1998, Meeting No. 10.)

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 5:00 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
