Meeting No. 50

Tuesday, April 9, 2002

The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met in a televised session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, David Pratt, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Rob Anders, Claude Bachand, Colleen Beaumier, Leon Benoit, Stan Dromisky, Cheryl Gallant, John O'Reilly, Janko Perić, David Pratt, David Price, Carmen Provenzano, Peter Stoffer, Elsie Wayne, Bob Wood.

Acting Member present: Larry Bagnell for Bryon Wilfert.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Michel Rossignol, Research Officer; Barry Hamilton, Consultant.

Witnesses: From the Department of National Defence: Lieutenant-General Lloyd C. Campbell, Chief of the Air Staff; CWO Daniel Gilbert, Air Command Chief Warrant Officer; Doug Langton, Director General Air Force Development.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of its study on the state of readiness of the Canadian Forces.

Lieutenant-General Campbell made an opening statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5 :16 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

 

At 5:17 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Leon Benoit moved, - That the Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs immediately commence a study on the Government’s purchase, for $101 million, of two jets to replace the Challenger aircraft now being used by the Prime Minister and his Cabinet.

 

Elsie Wayne moved, - That Leon Benoit’s motion be referred to the Steering Committee with the direction to staff to investigate the issue as to whether or not it’s properly dealt with by this standing committee and not by another standing committee of the House.
