MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS
(Meeting No. 14)
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 11, 1998
The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 3:33 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Stan Dromisky, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Jean Augustine, Norman Doyle, Stan Dromisky, Raymonde Folco, Sophia Leung, Steve Mahoney, John N. McKay, Grant McNally, Réal Ménard, John Reynolds and Jacques Saada.
Acting Members present: Peter Stoffer for Louise Hardy, Gurbax Malhi for Maria Minna and Gurmant Grewal for Deepak Obhrai.
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Margaret Young, Research Officer.
Witnesses: From the Department of Citizenship and Immigration: Brian Grant, Acting Director General, Enforcement Branch; Susan Leith, Director, Investigation and Removal, Enforcement Branch.
Pursuant to Standing Order 106(3), the Committee proceeded to consider a request by four (4) Members of the Committee to convene a meeting.
It was agreed, - That Anna Terrana be invited to appear before the Committee pursuant to her appointment to the Immigration and Refugee Board.
The Chairman presented the Third Report of the Sub-Committee on Agenda and Procedure.
By unanimous consent, the Committee agreed, - That the Third Report of the Sub-Committee be adopted.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of Recommendation 155 of the Report of the Legislative Review Advisory Group entitled "Not just Numbers: A Canadian Framework for Future Immigration", particularly issues relating to removal and detention. (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Wednesday, February 18, 1998, Meeting No. 10)
The witnesses made statements and answered questions.
At 4:55 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned until Thursday, March 12 1998.
