Wednesday, June 7, 2000
The Sub-Committee on Children and Youth at Risk of the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met jointly with the Sub-Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities of the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities in a televised session at 3:36 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chairs, John Godfrey and Carolyn Bennett, presiding.
Members of the Sub-Committee present: Carolyn Bennett, Libby Davies, John Godfrey and Diane St-Jacques.
Members of the Sub-Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities present: Carolyn Bennett, Nancy Karetak-Lindell and Wendy Lill.
Acting Member of the Sub-Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities present: Paul Crête for Madeleine Dalphond-Guiral.
Other Members present: Peter Adams, Bonnie Brown, Larry McCormick, Rey Pagtakhan and Judy Sgro.
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Julie MacKenzie and Bill Young.
Witnesses: From the Canadian Institute of Child Health: Dawn Walker, Executive Director. From the Caledon Institute of Social Policy: Sherri Torjman, Vice-President. From the Canadian Association for Community Living: Connie Laurin-Bowie, Director, Policy and Programs. From the National Centre for Child Care Inclusion: Sharon Hope Irwin, Executive Director, SpecialLink. From the Department of Human Resources Development Canada: Marta Morgan, Director, Children's Policy; Deborah Tunis, Director, Social Policy Development. From Health Canada: David Fransen, Director general, Population Health Directorate, Health Promotion and Programs Branch; Heather McCormack, Program Officer, Population Health Directorate, Childhood and Youth Division, Health Promotion and Programs Branch.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and its Order of Reference from the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities (See Minutes of Proceeding of February 29, 2000 - Meeting No.15), the Sub-Committee resumed its study on the future of children and youth in Canada with particular reference to children with disabilities.
Dawn Walker, Sherri Torjman, Connie Laurin-Bowie, Sharon Hope Irwin, Marta Morgan and David Fransen made an opening statement and, with the other participants, proceeded to a round table discussion.
At 5:35 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
