THURSDAY, March 19, 1998

The Standing Committee on Health met at 9:13 o’clock a.m., this day, in

Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Beth Phinney, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Elinor Caplan, Aileen Caroll, Reed Elley, Lynn Myers, Pauline Picard, Joseph Volpe, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Odette Madore, Nancy Miller-Chenier and Gérald Lafrenière, Research Officers.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of natural health products. (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Thursday, November 20, 1997.)

Witnesses: From the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities: Barbara Wells, Executive director; Jim Dunsdon, Chairman, Inter-Provincial Regulatory Committee (NAPRA) and Registrar, Ontario College of Pharmacists; Dr. Linda Suveges, Chairman, National Drug Scheduling Advisory Committee. From USANA Canada Inc.: Warren T. Te Brugge, Managing Director. From Health House: Andrew Boychuk, Researcher. As an individual : Dr. Jennifer Armstrong, Environmental Medicine. From the Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Toronto: G. Harvey Anderson, Professor, Nutritional Sciences and Physiology, co-Director, Program in Food Safety; A. Venket Rao, Professor, Nutritional Sciences, co-Director, Program in Food Safety; Dr. David Jenkins, Professor, Nutritional Sciences and Medicine, Director, The Clinical Nutrition and Risk Factor Modification Centre; Peter Shin, Program Manager, University-Industry Affiliates Office, Program in Food Safety.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 12:06 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
