MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

TUESDAY, APRIL 28,1998
The Sub-Committee on the Study of Sport in Canada of the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 9:00 o’clock a.m., this day, in a televised session, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Dennis Mills, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Jim Abbott, Denis Coderre, Dennis Mills, Peter MacKay, Pat O'Brien, George Proud, Suzanne Tremblay and Nelson Riis.
Acting Members present: Mauril Bélanger for Albina Guarnieri.
Other Members present: Preston Manning; Monte Solberg; David Iftody; John Cannis; Wendy Lill; John Solomon; Mark Muise and Carmen Provenzano.
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Claude Blanchette, Research Officer.
Witnesses: From the National Hockey League: Gary Bettman, Commissioner, National Hockey League; Stephen Bellringer, President and CEO, Orca Bay Sports & Entertainment, Vancouver Canucks; Glen Sather, President and General Manager, Edmonton Oilers; Ronald Corey, President and Governor, Montreal Canadiens; Rod Bryden, Chairman and Governor, Ottawa Senators; Ken Dryden, President and General Manager, Toronto Maple Leafs; and Harley Hotchkiss, President and Governor, Calgary Flames, and Chairman, NHL Board of Governors.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed the consideration of the Study of Sport in Canada.
Gary Bettman, Stephen Bellringer, Glen Sather, Ronald Corey, Rod Bryden, Ken Dryden and Harley Hotchkiss made opening statements and answered questions.
At 11:41 o’clock a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
